Abstract

In 2005, the USDA/APHIS Wildlife Services program (Wildlife Services) began work on the Trapping Oral History Initiative. Dr. John Shivik approached Nancy Freeman, NWRC Archivist/Records Manager, in July 2004 with an idea for capturing the experiences and knowledge of Wildlife Services trappers. The goal of the Initiative was to capture the personal stories of retired and semi-retired federal government trappers. Together Shivik and Freeman planned the Trapper Oral History Initiative, selected individuals to interview, secured funding, and oversaw the project. Freeman did extensive research into best practices for oral history interviews, pre-interview biographical questionnaires, transcriptions, cataloging and preserving oral histories, equipment, and presenting oral histories online. During 2005-2006 Freeman and Diana Dwyer, NWRC Supervisory Technical Information Specialist, conducted 24 oral history interviews in 12 states. The interviews highlight the trappers' family-lives, education, and careers in wildlife damage management. The interviews cover more than a 50-year time period, starting in the 1950s, and highlight the evolution of trapping towards more humane and selective tools and techniques.
