Biographical / Historical
Mark E. Tobin was born on May 19, 1951 in San Francisco, California. He earned a bachelor’s degree in zoology from the University of California Berkeley, and earned his master’s and PhD in wildlife ecology from UC Davis. During his graduate studies, he conducted research at the DWRC Dixon, California field station. He was a Post Doctoral Research Associate with Cornell University for 3 years before being hired on full-time by the DWRC in 1988. For this position, he moved to Hawaii to reopen the closed Hilo field station and to study rat damage to sugarcane and macadamia nut orchards. Following his seven and a half years in Hawaii, Mark transferred to the Starkville, Mississippi field station. In 1999 he transferred to the NWRC headquarters as the Bird Research Program Manager. Mark was promoted to Assistant Director of the Center in 2008, and held that position until his retirement. Mark is married and has two children.
