Biographical / Historical
Frederick F. Knowlton was born on November 24, 1934 in Springville, New York and was raised on a farm outside of Buffalo, New York. He earned a bachelor's in Wildlife Management from Cornell then earned a master's from Montana State College (now Montana State University Bozeman) and a Ph.D. from Purdue University. Knowlton's career as a research biologist began in 1956 with the New York Conservation District. He moved on to work for the Montana Fish and Game Department and a few universities before joining the Denver Wildlife Research Center in 1964. Knowlton worked in the San Antonio, Texas Field Station and then the Logan, Utah Field station until his retirement in 2007. Knowlton primarily studied coyote depredation of livestock. In his retirement he raises sheep with his wife Josephine whom he married in 1962. They have four children.

Abstract
Fred Knowlton reminisces about his work for Wildlife Services, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). He speaks of his experiences as a wildlife biologist and researcher (primarily coyotes and jackrabbits). Knowlton worked out of the Logan, Utah Field Station but conducted research in several states. He generally focused on coyote depredation and livestock protection. He talks about his experiences with animal research, various Wildlife Services and related personnel and supervisors, interactions with animal rights activists, and negative media and events associated with Wildlife Services.
