The novel human coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was first reported in China in December 2019. The World Health Organization declared the rapidly spreading COVID-19 outbreak as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern in January 2020 and a pandemic by March 2020. To stop the spread of the virus, strict measures such as social distancing and travel restrictions were put in place, including at the NWRC, which implemented mandatory telework in late March 2020. Vaccinations to fight the spread of the virus were quickly developed and made available in spring 2021. After nearly two years of teleworking, NWRC employees officially returned to the office in May 2022. The federal COVID-19 Public Health Emergency declaration ended on May 11, 2023.
