Biographical / Historical

Joseph L. Guarino was born in Waterbury, Connecticut on October 6, 1929,and was the youngest of 14 children. In the 1950s he served in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany. After returning to the States, he went on to graduate with a B.S. in Wildlife Management from the University of Connecticut in 1959. While studying for a master's degree in 1961 at the University of Wisconsin, Guarino was hired to work in the Bird Unit at the Denver Wildlife Research Center. Until his retirement in 1986, he worked in field research studying bird depredation of crops and later aviation hazards. He was married to his wife Anne for over 40 years until her death in 1994. Guarino passed away on April 3, 2011.

Abstract

Joe Guarino reminisces about his career in the Bird Unit of Wildlife Services, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). He shares stories of field work in bird depredation, trapping,and banding birds. He also describes his research related to toxicants, deterrents, repellents, and decoys. Guarino speaks of Wildlife Services personnel with whom he worked, the field stations where he was employed, and the Universities and airports he partnered with for research. Guarino's primary research field was in crop depredation and aviation bird strikes.
