Scope and Contents
The Trapping Oral History Initiative Records were compiled by Nancy Freeman in collaboration with Diana Dwyer and Dr. John Shivik. Collection dates range from 1999-2011, the bulk falling between 2004-2008. Dates prior to 2004 reflect previous research by Freeman, and dates later than 2008 reflect correspondence with the interviewees after the initiative was completed. The collection consists of five record boxes and one CD box. Materials include research and project files, biographies of interviewees, transcripts of interviews, correspondence, publications, photographs, CDs containing interviews, and digital files.

Biographical / Historical
Richard H. Phillips was born in Driggs, Idaho on August 20, 1944. He began trapping as a boy to assist his father in pest control on the family farm. After high school he worked a variety of jobs including fur trapping. Phillips began working for the federal government as a trapper in wildlife management in 1969, working his way up to District Supervisor in Pocatello, Idaho, then State Director in Arizona and Wyoming. Phillips retired in 2000 and enjoys blacksmithing and playing the guitar.

Abstract
Rick Phillips reminisces about his past work for Wildlife Services, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). He talks about his experiences as a government trapper in predator control and research (primarily coyotes) and as a state director in Arizona and Wyoming. Phillips remembers his experiences with animals and trapping, various Wildlife Services and state services, and wildlife damage management.
