Biographical / Historical

Guy E. Connolly was born October 15, 1938 in St. Paul, Minnesota. After obtaining his B.S. in Forest Conservation from the University of Montana, Missoula in 1961, Connolly briefly worked as a wildlife management biologist for the USFWS Range Surveys in Eastern Oregon (1961-1962). He also worked for the University of California, Davis, Hopland Field Station from 1962-1975, during which time he obtained his M.A. in Biology from California State College at Sonoma. In 1975 he joined the staff of the Department of Agriculture's (USDA), Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), Wildlife Services, Denver Wildlife Research Center (DWRC), Animal Damage Control (ADC) Program as a wildlife research biologist. (Wildlife Services was formerly known as Animal Damage Control, under the Fish and Wildlife Service). Connolly worked for the DWRC Field Station in Twin Falls, Idaho (1975-1985; 1986-1989), the APHIS in Hyattsville, Maryland (1985-1986), and the DWRC in Lakewood, Colorado (1989-1997) until his retirement. Connolly is an accomplished musician (symphony orchestra French horn) and record collector. He married Helen Hancock in 1961 and together they have two children.

Abstract

Guy Connolly reminisces about his career as a wildlife research biologist working for the the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), Range Surveys, the University of California at Davis-Hopland Field Station and the USDA's, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), Wildlife Services, Denver Wildlife Research Center (DWRC). He discusses his work in wildlife and range management and depredation control research, including different methods he used such as trapping, M-44, and livestock protection collars. Connolly speaks of the attitudes and interactions between research and operations personnel and his role as a staff liaison. He also discusses the future of trapping and wildlife research management.
