Richard Mel Engeman was born June 4, 1951, in Iowa City, IA. In the late 1950s, his family moved to Denver, CO, where he graduated from Wheat Ridge High School in 1969. He received a BS and MS from Colorado State University in mathematics and statistics, respectively. Rick was hired by the Denver Wildlife Research Center (predecessor to the NWRC) in 1979 after completing his PhD at the University of Colorado’s Medical School.
As a statistician, Rick was involved in a wide range of projects at the Center. He worked on monitoring, indexing, and the economics of wildlife damage management for a variety of species including carnivores, feral swine, and invasive reptiles. His areas of expertise included statistics, experimental design, population monitoring, distance sampling, and plotless density estimation. Over the years Rick spent time at nearly all the Center’s field stations as well as many other temporary duty stations in the US and abroad including Australia, Germany, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Guam. As one of the Center’s most highly published authors, Rick completed over 400 journal and conference papers. His numerous collaborations resulted in shared authorship with over 400 people. After forty years of service, Rick retired from the NWRC in 2019.
