Biographical / Historical

Monte M. Dodson was born Feb. 5, 1925 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He served in the military in 1945 and attended the University of Oklahoma where he earned a B.S. in Applied Ecology. While in school, he majored in Zoology and minored in Botany. Dodson spend his career in Oklahoma and Arizona working for Oklahoma Game and Fish Department and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services as a biologist, ranger, and various management positions including refuge manager at Kofa National Wildlife Refuge and Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge. Dodson was introduced to trapping in 1935 and continued to trap until 1945. After his retirement in 1978 he renewed trapping in the winter months. Dodson married his wife Margaret in 1966 and has one daughter. Dodson passed away in 2020.

Abstract

Monte Dodson reminisces about his past work for Wildlife Services, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Idaho Fish and Game Department, U.S. Fish and Game, and Oklahoma Game and Fish Departments. He speaks of his experiences as a government trapper in predator control and the different trapping methods and equipment used. Dodson talks about his experiences with animals, various Wildlife Services, and wildlife management.
