Biographical / Historical
Larry Clark was born in southeastern Pennsylvania but moved to the Washington, D.C., area as a child. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland, a master’s degree from Northern Arizona University, and PhD from the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied urban starlings in Philadelphia landfills. After completing his PhD, Dr. Clark accepted a postdoctoral position at the Monell Chemical Senses Center, a nonprofit research center in Philadelphia, and studied the presence of green plants and their use as disease and parasite controlling agents in startling nests. After 12 years at the Monell Center, he was hired as a project leader at the newly-formed National Wildlife Research Center (NWRC), where he worked on researching bird repellents and disease systems. Fifteen years later, Clark was promoted to assistant director, managing NWRC field stations. In 2008, he became director of the NWRC, serving in that role until his retirement. Dr. Clark’s research led to four patents and licenses in the area of nonlethal wildlife management. In addition, his career achievements include the Kerry-Manheimer Award in 2013 for contributions to the chemosensory sciences, and the Federal Laboratory Consortium’s Federal Director of the Year Award in 2019. In honor of his accomplishments, the city of Fort Collins declared June 4, 2019 Dr. Larry Clark Day.
