Biographical / Historical

Michael W. Fall was born December 17, 1942 in Port Clinton, Ohio. He attended Bowling Green State University from 1961-1965 where he worked several jobs for the Department of Biology including a museum assistant, Lake Erie Islands Expedition Leader, and Enewetak Atoll Expedition Biologist. He obtained a B.S. in Biology/English in 1963 and a M.A. in Biology/Pyschology in 1966. While attending Pennsylvania State University from 1965-1970 to procur his PhD in Entomology/Vertebrate Pest Management, Fall worked for the Departments of Zoology and Entomology as a field station leader, graduate research assistant, and instructor. He joined the Denver Wildlife Research Center in 1970 as a wildlife biologist-field station leader for the International Programs Section which was based on the campus of the University of the Philippines, College of Agriculture, Quezon, Philippines. He conducted primarily rodent control research and provided on-site training to international colleagues for five years until returning to Denver in 1975, where he continued as staff mammologist in the international programs group. There he provided project development as well as training and expertise to foreign biologists worldwide. In 1981, he became the Mammal Research Program Manager of the renamed National Wildlife Research Center until his formal retirement in 2001. Since 2001, Fall has worked as a part-time wildlife biologist and manager of a cooperative agreement between the NWRC and the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies. He has held or holds numerous committee, scholar, teaching and adjunct staff appointments and completed a Certificate in Managment/Adminsitration for the University of Denver in 1985. A landscape gardening enthusiast and avid house remodeler, Fall and his wife Majilinde (Linde) have one son.

Abstract

Mike Fall reminisces about his career, from 1970-2001, with the Denver Wildlife Research Center(DWRC) (later renamed the National Wildlife Research Center), a facility within the USDA's, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), Wildlife Services. Fall discusses his vertebrate pest control and trapping work in the Philippines and other foreign countries such as Nicaragua, Venezuela, and Bangladesh. He also talks about his work as head of an international program unit, working with foreign biologists and governments. Additional topics covered include Bowling Green University and Pennsylvania State University; rats and their damage to crops; various traps such as the engine and Korean rat traps; predator management, wildlife damage control and wildlife damage management; and the future of trapping and wildlife research and management.
