Biographical / Historical

As a Science Fellow at the National Wildlife Research Center from 2005-2009, John L. Pilon developed and tested experimental vaccines to prevent chronic wasting disease (CWD). He used the mouse model system to investigate vaccine design using plant produced vaccines (TMV). Pilon and his team produced a vaccine that prolonged the survival of mice that had been vaccinated and subsequently challenged with infectious prions. The successful mouse model... vaccine led to the first known application of a CWD vaccine in mule deer.

Because CWD remains in the environment for years, in addition to vaccine research, Pilon also worked on methods for removal of infections materials. Enzymatic destruction of infectious prion material was the primary focus of his decontamination studies.
