Scope and Contents

The Rick Engeman Records (NWRC 0043) consists of materials dated 1972 to 2017, with the bulk falling from 1990 to 2010. This is a large collection (16 LF) that highlights Rick’s 40-year career (1979-2019) with the DWRC/NWRC, where he worked on monitoring, indexing, and the economics of wildlife damage management for a variety of species.



Materials from Rick's work with the Statistical Services Unit dominate this collection, including projects he worked on with the Bird Damage, Chemical Development, Mammal Damage, Predator Control, and Technical Services Units, as well as his work on International projects and work with cooperators. Also included are a number of his publications dated 1979 to 2014. The subjects best represented in this collection are avian predator control, invasive species such as feral swine and brown tree snake, animal damage to trees, sea turtle predation, and methods to monitor wildlife populations. Material types in this collection include correspondence, memorandums, reports, research data, publications, computer printouts, and maps.

Biographical / Historical

Richard M. Engeman was born June 4, 1951 in Iowa City, Iowa, but was raised in Denver, Colorado. He earned a B.S. in mathematics and a M.S. in statistics from Colorado State University. He also earned a doctorate from the University of Colorado’s School of Medicine.



Rick was hired by the Denver Wildlife Research Center (predecessor to the NWRC) as a statistician in 1979. Over the next forty years, Rick worked on monitoring, indexing, and the economics of wildlife damage management for a variety of species including carnivores, rodents, feral swine, endangered and threatened species, as well as invasive reptiles. His areas of expertise included statistics, experimental design, population monitoring, distance sampling, and plotless density estimation.



During his career with the Center, Rick authored/coauthored more than 400 journal and conference papers and worked in a number of temporary duty stations and foreign countries including Australia, Mexico, Tasmania, Morocco, Puerto Rico, Haiti and Guam. Rick was also president of the local American Statistical Association chapter and was very involved in their conferences. Rick retired from the NWRC in the spring of 2019.
