Biographical / Historical

The State Board of Stock Commissioners, predecessor to the Nevada Department of Agriculture was created in 1915 by the Nevada State Legislature. The Commissioners, in conjunction with the University of Nevada, adopted rules and regulations from the U.S Bureau of Biological Survey in relation to the control and suppression of diseases in livestock. In addition to disease control among stock, the Commission often offered and paid bounties for killing livestock predators such as coyotes, wolves, bears, and mountain lions.

In addition to the Stock Commission, wildlife management in Nevada was provided by the Nevada Branch of Predatory Animal and Rodent Control, which began as the Nevada-California district in 1915. The Nevada branch broke from the Nevada-California district in 1920. Early efforts focused on disease as rodents, the plague, and rabies were significant issues in the region in the 1920s and 1930s.

Throughout the years, wildlife management has remained a priority for the state of Nevada. The current mission of the Nevada Wildlife Services Program, under the direction of USDA APHIS is to protect sheep, cattle, and other livestock from excessive predation from coyotes, mountain lions, and ravens.
