Abstract

The Animal Damage Control Reports arereports detailing the expenditures, employee statistics, and wildlife control activities each fiscal year in every state starting in the early 1900s. They document the activities of the National Wildlife Research Center’s predecessor, the Animal Damage Control Program, and the evolution of wildlife management practices over the course of a century. The oldest Animal Damage Control Reports on record are from the year 1915, slightly after the Division of Biological Survey became the Bureau of Biological Survey. In the early days, the reports were generally a compilation of the data from two or more states, called districts. They mostly dealt with predator and rodent eradication until the 70s and 80s, when other issues such as birdstrikes and invasive species gained prevalence. While each state’s program eventually became its own entity with its own individual reports, a regional system still collected and summarized the reports of a handful of adjacent states for a more general summary of large areas. The seven regions are as follows:

Region 1: California, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Washington
Region 2: Arizona, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas
Region 3: Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ohio, Michigan
Region 4: Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina, Louisiana
Region 5: New York, West Virginia, Massachusetts, Maine, Maryland, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Virginia
Region 6: Colorado, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, Wyoming
Region 7: Alaska, Hawaii
