Creator

Biographical / Historical

The Dixon, California, Field Station was established by the US Fish and Wildlife Service Animal Damage Control program in the 1960s to conduct research on blackbirds damaging wine grapes in California. Throughout the years, research at the field station expanded to finding solutions to alleviate bird damage to other fruit crops such as cherries, as well as vegetable crops, sunflower, and rice.

Staff at the field station included two full-time wildlife biologists and a part-time clerk-typist. Station personnel also collaborated with graduate students (Mark Tobin and Mike Avery) at the University of California-Davis. The field station shared space with the USFWS Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center and the Columbia National Fisheries Research Laboratory. The facility occupied by the three groups was located on 1 acre in a rural area about 3 miles northeast of Dixon, CA, and included offices, a laboratory, shop and storage areas, various aviaries, test cages, and a parking lot, all within a fenced compound.

The Dixon Field Station closed in the mid-1980s when the Animal Damage Control program was moved from USDI/FWS to USDA/APHIS.
