John Pilon Digital Research--
Scope and Contents
The John L. Pilon Digital Research Files (NWRC 0048) contains research conducted by Pilon during his time as a Science Fellow at the NWRC. All materials in this collection are born-digital and include datasheets, presentations, images, figures and charts, correspondence, and papers related to Pilon’s work on experimental vaccines to prevent CWD in mule deer. Also included are materials related to CWD decontamination studies. Materials in this collection are dated 2005-2009.

Biographical / Historical
As a Science Fellow at the National Wildlife Research Center from 2005-2009, John L. Pilon developed and tested experimental vaccines to prevent chronic wasting disease (CWD). He used the mouse model system to investigate vaccine design using plant produced vaccines (TMV). Pilon and his team produced a vaccine that prolonged the survival of mice that had been vaccinated and subsequently challenged with infectious prions. The successful mouse model vaccine led to the first known application of a CWD vaccine in mule deer.
Because CWD remains in the environment for years, in addition to vaccine research, Pilon also worked on methods for removal of infections materials. Enzymatic destruction of infectious prion material was the primary focus of his decontamination studies.

Abstract
From 2005 to 2009, John L. Pilon conducted research at the NWRC on experimental vaccines for chronic wasting disease (CWD), as well as the application of the vaccine in mule deer. In addition, he conducted studies on decontamination methods to remove the disease from infected materials.
Arrangement
The John Pilon Digital Research Files are arranged into four Series:
Series I: Enzymatic Prion Decontamination Studies, 2006-2008
Series II: Images, 2005
Series III: Presentations, 2004-2007
Series IV: Second Generation Vaccine Studies, 2006-2008
Series I and IV contain subseries. Files in each series and subseries are arranged alphabetically by file name.
