Scope and Contents

The Mike Avery Digital Files Collection (NWRC 0047) consists of 13 series of digital files from the Gainesville, FL, Field Station dated 1998 to 2018. These files were created by Mike Avery, FL Field Station Leader, as well as by biologists Eric Tillman and John Humphrey. These records were transferred to the NWRC Archives upon Mike’s retirement. Topics covered in this collection include developing methods to reduce bird damage to aquaculture, grain and fruit crops, as well as the testing of repellents, chemical deterrents, and avian contraception methods. Also included are records related to vulture management and roost dispersal, monk parakeet population management and research on invasive species, including feral swine, mongoose, Burmese pythons, Nile monitors, and Argentine tegus. This collection also contains facility maps and design plans for the Florida Field Station offices and animal pens.

Biographical / Historical

Mike Avery served as the leader of the Gainesville, FL, Field Station from 1987 to 2017. During his tenure with the Center, he became recognized nationally and internationally for his work and expertise in a number of wildlife management areas including avian collisions with manmade structures (towers, powerlines, etc.); avian damage to grain and fruit crops; repellents and chemical deterrents; avian contraception methods; vulture management and roost dispersal; monk parakeet population management; and research on invasive species, including Burmese pythons and Argentine tegus.

Files in this collection are arranged by subject matter, as they were when they were transferred to the archives in 2018. Folders within each series are arranged alphabetically by title. Older versions of Word and Excel files were converted to the newest version of those programs. PowerPoint presentations were converted to pdf. BMP files were converted to jpg. DBF files were converted to Excel (xlsx).
