Biographical / Historical

In the late 1950s, nutria damage to sugarcane and rice became so acute that the states of Louisiana and Texas asked the Federal Government for help. Research on the problem was assigned to the USFWS Division of Wildlife Research, Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife. The Division's Denver Wildlife Research Center established field stations at Houma, Louisiana, and Beaumont, Texas, and in 1963 began working to develop methods for controlling nutria damage. Research activities at Houma, LA, were terminated in 1969 when efforts were switched to rodents in California.

Records from the Nutria Research Station in Houma, LA, are included in the Fresno Field Station Records due to Frank Schitoskey Jr., who transferred from the field station in Louisiana to become a Principle Investigator and Range Scientist at the Fresno station in 1969.
