Series III: Chemical Testing Index Cards
Scope and Contents
Many of the records in this series were compiled or created by chemist Ed Schafer. The range for this series is roughly the time of Schafer’s employment as there is no other time frame indicated. The series includes index cards listing lethal dosage (LD 50) data, Schafer’s personal file of index cards, mammal data, DRC# data, and lists of related publications. From roughly the 1940s until the early 1970s, the DWRC conducted testing on 7,000 chemicals. Ed Schafer worked on this project with other DWRC chemists, in addition to his focus on developing chemicals for use in controlling birds in agricultural settings. Towards the end of his career Schafer and DWRC chemist Walter Bowles worked on saving the records and data created during the chemical testing to make available for future researchers in what would become the Chemical Effects Database.
